Let’s have a looksee at all the necklaces that I own, shall we?
This is my classic, tried and true staple. It’s silver, it’s simple and it’s blue, what more could I need. I am not a person that’s into big or flashiness when it comes to the jewelry I wear (all you will be able to find on my wrists are 2 hair elastics and a waterproof watch) and this matches with that aesthetic style perfectly! Blue is my favourite colour so throwing this around my neck makes a simple outfit a little cuter in my opinion.
Do you heart this one too? This necklace is incredibly cute; the flower design on a glass heart is a really pretty pattern that’s perfect for making an outfit brighter. (I was going to use the adjective “smiley-er” but I don’t think that actually makes sense.)
If we’re going for originality points, this one wins hands down. The context is that this was a craft at the summer camp we worked with and there were enough supplies left over for myself and some other staff to get one! I love this simple idea to death, this well-known lego piece can now be a statement jewelry item! It also makes the connection with my being an engineer as building things is a central theme there. Also it’s blue, can’t have a bad day with a blue lego piece swinging from your neck!
I feel like a lot of people have this one lying around their house somewhere. I definitely first got this shark tooth necklace some time ago at the Museum of Nature and recently rediscovered it. It helps me feel hardcore when I wear it even though everyone keeps gently reminding me that I am a few degrees away from being hardcore.
This one doesn’t actually get worn very often, mostly because it isn’t anything too special and it’s gold. I think having blonde hair limits the amount of gold or yellow that I can wear because if they’re not the exact same shade then it just looks wrong. I’m also very sure this necklace came along with my Secret Garden book someone gave me a long while ago.
This is definitely my fanciest necklace, it was a gift for graduating high school! It is similar to the first necklace, keeping the blue gem, silver chain trend, although I think these gems are actually real instead of just glass. The shape of it signifies the path of my life that I’ve started as high school came to a close. I should wear it more often.
And there you have it! My vast collection of neck-themed jewelry! (read: 6) I’ve never been someone that wears them too often though, so they usually sit on my dresser until I remember that they exist!
Your turn! Let me know your favourite necklace that you own or even just favourite type of necklace that you’ve seen!
Based on my absolute favourite book: The True Meaning of Smekday
This is going to be a review of the adaptation of one of my favourite books of all time. I still haven’t made an actual review of it to link to you guys but one day it will arrive. Although I sincerely think the contents of it would be something along the lines of: “read these 17 quotes, aren’t they hilarious, oh here’s some context refer to the glossary for all the words that don’t make sense now look at this picture hahaha remember when oh yeah you might not have read it why are you reading this when you could read that dude go do it now trust this internet stranger”
Truly feeling like a hipster when I first read the book when it came out 8 years ago (le gasp I’m old) and finally the movie adaptation was released in 2015 with most people who see it never knowing that there was a book first and the book was better.
Yep, I went ahead and said it. The book was truly magnificent with a blend of random and deep and the movie chose a few of the lessons learned in the book, made the painfully obvious and then dumbed everything else down to kid level. Which I respect I guess, movies are a different form of entertainment than books and when you put that much effort into animating this world, it’s got to be something the masses and target audience will enjoy.
If I had seen the movie never knowing about the book’s existence, I still would have loved it though, the book is not the only thing that’s making me give Home an overall great review. I mean, I could spend the whole time griping about how they missed their chance of including teleportation, asphyxiation and just-add-water-sheep-lookalikes but I think I’ll pass.
Right away, Oh was a little over the top but it makes the plot by setting him aside as an outcast and making his transformation in the end more obvious. I bet the kids adored him and his silly antics even though I was more entertained with how they kept the stilted speech of the Boov similar to the style of the book than his ridiculous antics.
Side note: I was lie-on-the-floor devastated when I found out that they had changed his name from J.Lo to Oh because that takes away from the insane charm of the book. However, I was dance-with-strangers-on-the-street happy that they managed to cast the actual J.Lo as Tip’s mother.
Captain Smek was a character that I did not care for in the least. He was even more comic relief than Oh was and it was pretty much just annoying. The gelatinous and colourful body properties of the Boov were unnecessary in my opinion but I guess got a kick out of it. I need to keep reminding myself that this movie is in fact not aimed towards 20 year old girls.
Rihanna was perfect as Tip and Tip was the character that best translated from page to screen. They kept the fact that she was scared and needed her mother and was willing to do whatever it took to get there. She was strong and vulnerable and basically amazing.
The final main character was Kyle the traffic Boov and while he may seem like just some random guy that they added I basically died when I heard that he was actually going to be important. In the book, J.Lo pretends that he knows a traffic Boov and calls her Kyle and it’s just a random not-really-that-important interaction so I love how big a role he ended up getting.
The plot was so basic compared to that of the book but it had enough twists and funny moments to keep me entertained.
One of my actual favourite scenes was one they took straight from the book, direct quotes and everything‼ It happened in the mopo (although I forget if it was an actual mopo in the movie) slash convenience store where Oh and Tip first meet. All of that coming into the out and mimom and shoot forth lasers from my eyeballs and exploding heads being impolite was from the book and it made me so happy! If you are near me when that happens, I not only quote the entire thing along with them but I also fill in the rest with every fact from the book that you really didn’t want to know and are busy just wishing I would be quiet.
But who wouldn’t want to know that Gratuity found something called Tub! That came with its own spoon?????
In the novel, Slushious takes them across the United States but I found traveling across the pacific and around the world made the adventure even more exciting! There was just enough panic with the invitation bringing their enemies down upon them to keep you on the edge of your seat and all the Boov technology was really well done!
Some more subtle nods to the book I had forgotten about until now are the orange peels that Captain Smek was wearing as that ended up being all the rage to the Boov in Florida as well as Oh eating the urinal cakes in the bathroom.
Finally, the ending was really well done. The friendship and family tie-ins were very strong and real and pulled at all the right emotions. At this point we had strayed so far from the book plot that I could simply appreciate that finale for all it was.
At the end of the day, Home is an amazing movie with an amazing soundtrack featuring the first black animated protagonist which is pretty nifty and great. It’s cute enough for both kids and adults to enjoy and will hopefully expose people to the book it originated from so that they can experience true happiness.
And that includes everything about a certain person. Doesn’t matter if you’re one of my besties or the friend of a friend that I’ve been left alone with until the mutual friend comes back and we’re just standing there awkwardly. I will always be interested in what you have to say about a vast amount of topics.
I satisfy this curiosity by having random questions on hand to spark these conversations. Some regulars include “What is your favourite tree?” and “What is your ideal ugly sweater design?” and also “What store would you live in for a week?”.
I like when people really put thought into their answers and make it a personal thing instead of just giving me a look and shrugging some easy answer. It’s my way of getting to know who the person is through what kinds of things they think about. Like for the tree one, I legitimately have a top 3 so you know I like nature and lists for starters. Also people that clarify the questions even further gives me even more insight to who they are and how they think. For example, with my last question, someone who thinks more logically than impulsively might ask if they can bring anything while they’re living there or if it’s some weird type of camping where you have to survive off what’s there already.
It’s a really great way to simultaneously break the ice for what they’re getting into when being my friend/acquaintance since weird is my bread and butter while also fast tracking the learning about each other phase. I can find out what you’re doing in university later, let’s talk about which one you think is more gross: worms, snakes or spiders.
I know my answers and what it probably says about me and I’m always ready to give them if my conversational partner decides to bounce it back to me. (In this scenario: 1) Aspen, Willow, Birch, 2) Yellow, orange and purple with hot dogs and teabags and a pretentious quote and 3) IKEA)
If we get all psychoanalyze-y here, I’m pretty fairly certain that the reason my questions are so specific, as in they can usually be answer in one word or sentence, is because that’s the kind of question I like answer. The open ended ones are too broad and I never know what to say and I assume the other person doesn’t really care anyway so what’s the point. When I’m given specific questions, then I know exactly what is being asked of me and I know they want that information. It’s a win-win!
Also would you rather have a conversation about flying squirrels versus regular squirrels or about what you’re thinking of doing with your life once you graduate.
The first answer to any of those “what person dead or alive would you want to have dinner with” questions is Adam Rex.
He’s the author and illustrator to many a book, including my all time favourite: The True Meaning of Smekday.
We’ll get into exactly why that is in a later post so that I can put all my focus into converting you into a major fan also but the point of this post is to celebrate and anticipate!
After 8 long years, there is now a sequel. The first book was a standalone, the ending was satisfying (actually it was a lot more than that) so it’s not like we’ve been dying over a cliffhanger for the past couple years but it excites me to no end that there will be more of an alien named J.Lo and a girl named Tip in a post-alien invasion world that will apparently include a presidential campaign but I know nothing because I haven’t even read the description I just want to go in blind and be amazed.
that was one very extremely long run on sentence
Things I Hope To See In The Sequel:
– more boovish history
– Gratuity and her mom
– J.Lo not understanding normal human things
– J.Lo’s horrible grammar
– how the aliens have integrated themselves into our world
The novel came out February 10th so there is absolutely no reason as to why I am not reading it right now. That makes me a little upset. Not sure if I should just go out and buy it or wait for the 8 people in line ahead of me at the library to hurry up and finish…
If you guys are fans of Adam Rex’s work, let me know so we can discuss at length how awesome these books are!!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how great Bastille sounds in concert? Like, it’s basically flawless; his voice is perfect and everyone is doing everything they should be doing right on beat. Question time: What’s your favourite Bastille song?? (and if you’ve never heard of them what are you doing with your life […]
Let me preface this by saying that this is not the type of book you’d usually see me reading. And that’s actually kind of sad. Because although I do adore a lot of the books I read, there’s so much more out there that I need to also dive into. But anyway yeah, this isn’t a dystopian book centred around a girl who fights the government and gets two boys to fight over her and that’s okay.
Ready Player One was recommended to me in this person‘s book rec vlog and I was just like “okay, yeah, I’ll order it at the library and see if I have time to get through it. The cover’s kind of cool or whatever.” Like it caught my attention but not in the I’m Going To Die If I Don’t Have This In My Hands Within The Next Hour way. (Kinda like Blood Red Road, actually.)
I brought it with me to read on a long car journey and couldn’t put it down. It’s an almost 400 page novel and I finished it in two nights plus the car ride. Seriously it was fantastic and I couldn’t get enough of it. There were so many puzzles and the characters were amazing and I probably had a smile on my face while reading some of it; it was really that great.
I’m going to try and give you a little synopsis so here we go: Our main character is Wade Watts. His dad named him that because he thought the alliteration gave his name a sort of superhero vibe (a la Peter Parker or Clark Kent) but that’s not important to the plot, I just thought it was cool. Anyway, this whole thing is set way into the future where basically all anyone does is go on the Oasis which is a video game turned virtual reality thingy where you can live your life in a cooler way than you ever could in real life.
The creator of all this is a dude named James Halliday whose death marked the beginning of this book. Obviously he was all kinds of rich and obviously he was an antisocial recluse that didn’t have any heirs to pass down his massive fortune to. SO he thought “hey, why not hold a contest where I hide three keys for three gates in my little Oasis game and whoever goes through all the gates gets all the money! That cool with everyone?”
Obviously everyone went crazy trying to find them but this world had thousands upon thousands of planets and you really had to know what you were looking for to get there so it really got nowhere and a lot of people gave up. But not our Wade. Despite being so poor that he can’t even pay to get off the planet he’s on right now, he’s decided he’s going to be the one to win this contest and basically devotes his life to being obsessed with everything Halliday was every obsessed with. Aka anything to do with 80s culture and also videogames.
I’m not going to go into any more detail but there are friends and there are bad guys and there are eureka moments and it’s just one of the best things I have ever read in a while.
I can’t imagine what reading it must be like to people who actually know more than your average human about 80s pop culture because I am not well versed in most of that yet I still really enjoyed reading about it. Like every second page was just full of release dates and artists and producers and the most minute details on random things like Monty Python or Atari or John Hughes.
All the strategy and hardcore clue solving made me giddy as the whole process was described in lots of detail so even if you, like me, could barely even get your head around what they were talking about, you would still be able to grasp the connections and marvel at the ingenuity of it all.
It was a great beat-the-odds type of book where these teenagers faced a greedy corporation that wanted the winnings for themselves and had all the resources to do it yet were still undermined by some pesky kids.
The romance was kind of forced and interrupted the goods parts (and I don’t usually say that ever!!) but it came through at the end and was pretty adorable.
And I’ve been trying to keep it spoiler free but I need to get something off my chest so if you’re going to read this book and care about spoilers please don’t read the next paragraph, kay?
So when they revealed Aech’s real life identity, I had to laugh. Like I was kinda rooting for him to be a black character y’know cause Wade wouldn’t be expecting that or something but no, Aech had to be every single minority possible all tossed into one. Which is great that there’s representation and all but after most people being white and male, with the exception of Art3mis, it was a little bit of a shock to see a black, overweight, lesbian woman. I like that she exists, it’s just a little funny that it wasn’t spread out or anything among many characters it was just BAM hello. Yeah that’s what I wanted to say.
Anyway, please read the book, I don’t even know if it’s popular amongst everyone because, like I mentioned earlier, I don’t really roll in those circles, although I should really start doing that. Sci fi is quite great!
This is such a cool video! The Gregory Brothers from youtube took songs in minor keys and made them major and vice versa. It’s really neat how much a third and a seventh (I think that’s the difference??) makes a change to a song. I love what they did with the arrangements and how each […]
I’m not the biggest watcher of all these award shows.
I rarely know they’re happening until I start seeing gifs and commentary on tumblr. (No, I’m not always on tumblr. Just when I’m not sleeping, okay?) But this was the Oscars and they’re big enough that I did clue in on them. And with Ellen Desgeneres hosting and Benedict Cumberbatch in the audience there’s a high chance I would be incredibly sad if I missed it. Also my mom and sister have randomly become crazy award show buffs?? Like they watched the Grammy’s together and I don’t think my mom even likes any of that kind of music…
But a lot happened tonight so let us condense it in the best way possible: bullets.
Leonardo DiCaprio did not finally win his first Oscar as everyone on tumblr was holding their breath for. I expected this because Wolf on Wall Street isn’t a very deep movie and that’s a little bit of a requirement.
Was that too long of a bullet? I’ll stop explaining myself.
Lupita Nyong’o is the queen (and also won Best Supporting Actress)
Ellen literally ordered a pizza and brought the poor pizza guy in to feed the first few lucky rows
Ellen also took a selfie that was probably the greatest thing ever
All the musical performances were actually phenomenal (shoutout to Happy and Let It Go)
Frozen won some awards!!
Gravity won 7/10 awards it was nominated for
Croods didn’t win best animated even though, in my opinion, it should have probably because, well at least my theory is, it was released way earlier in the year and people forgot how awesome it was.
12 Years A Slave won best picture
Lots of the winners had premade speeches on folded up pieces of paper and some were shaking and some literally jumped up and down and they were all adorable and it was so exciting watching them be happy about their wins
How To Train Your Dragon music was playing in one of the interludes
And that’s what I took from the show! What was your favourite part?
To be honest, I’m kind of surprised that I’ve stuck with this for as long as I have! I’m the kind of person that likes the beginning of things, like learning something completely brand new at school or knitting projects or blank notebooks because there’s a ton of possibilities and so much could happen. Once I’m actually into it, I realize that it’ll take hard work to continue doing this and slowly extricate myself from the whole deal. Unfinished should be my middle name for the amount of things that I abandon. Except it’s not because my mom is pretty decent and decided not to do that to me. I don’t even have a middle name. Fun fact.
I think the main reason that this blog is still chugging along is because no one expects anything from it. Like, as of now, I have 13 followers and one of them is my sister so it’s not like there are people out there who don’t want to be disappointed. Also, the fact that I must post every single day means that I have some leg room if any of my posts are especially lame since it’s not like I had a whole week or something to create something brilliant and thought provoking as well as witty. To tell the truth, all my posts are pretty much done at midnight and then I change the time stamp to a more normal hour. Yup, your life is a lie.
I considered stopping the whole one post a day deal because school is especially crazy right now and I really should be studying in all my spare time but I really feel like me and the commitment could go a long way! It’ll be cool looking back on this later on and seeing what me from the past thought would be cool to blog about. (More like cringe probably. Present me and past me never really agree)
But yeah, there’s that thought process put into words. Funny how it took me all of 4 seconds in real like but over 300 words…
School-wise, things are going swimmingly! I have quite a few friends and most of them are really hardcore studiers. This in turn makes me feel super guilty about not studying and then pushes me to put in more effort! Like for example, I started studying for my midterm that’s on Wednesday yesterday!! That’s a whole 4 days before instead of the usual 1! My next step should probably be to make study notes as the classes go along, not all at once while frantically studying…
Kind of really excited for this week to be over because I have three midterms on four days and one of those days is a saturday…not cool. I’ve never had tests this back to back (except in high school but I am slowly realizing that high school is nothing compared to university) before meaning I always had a wackload of time to study for the next one in between so I’m feeling really unprepared going into this. Afterwards though, my church is holding a Royal Ball that I’m helping out at for all the little kids. They get to be little princesses and princes! I’ll probably do some craft with them. There’s also the fact that I don’t think I’ll have any more midterms until the second round of them since I haven’t heard anything about Intro to Mech Eng and Physics’ only has one midterm way later on.
Really the only thing keeping me going is the fact that I only must survive this week and the next and then it’s reading week! A million blessings on the person that invented that. A whole week to catch up on sleep and tv shows for the first 5 days and then cram all the studying I should have been doing the whole time into the last two. That and also when people favourite or retweet me on twitter. I seriously put a lot of work into wording otherwise bland life events into witty one-liners over there so validation is always welcome!
So that’s about it, my mom has actually commented on my potato-like status on the couch I’m occupying at the moment which means it’s around time to switch my location back to my desk.
