Family Day

I don’t know what you Americans are on about with President’s Day but here in the north, we’re getting school and work off because of Family Day.

Thus, even though it is my reading week off from university, I have not made any plans with friends and am spending the day with the fam. But unlike other families that probably have cool things planned and winter activities to get up to we do things a little differently.

The day started by not starting until about 11:30am. Missing breakfast entirely, making the cats anxious about not being fed at their usual 6:30am and being awake but not having to get out of bed. Talk about perfect.

We then had a sorting party of receipts and coupons and laundry and got all that cleaning out of the way in a social and chill manner. My sister was looking over her physics homework at the same time so I got to reminisce about those easy times.

Then we had a super important competition of who could throw smarties up in the air and catch them in their mouth the best. I can think of nothing better than watching my mom whole-heartedly participate in this.

The rest of the day was chill, we watched the movie Babe, some episodes of elementary all the while my sister consumed 2 bags of popcorn and I crocheted a shark pencil case.

It was an amazing day and I just had to share it with yall. Normally it isn’t this stress-free to be around them which is why I’m so enthused!

Procrastination Tips

If you’ve followed me even for a short amount of time, you’ll know that I’m kind of an expert on procrastination.

So I’ve helpfully compiled a useful list of tips you can use to waste time more efficiently. These are tried and true, if you were worried about studying too much or getting everything done on your to do list too early, do not fret, this list has got you covered.

– Write a blog post.

– Check facebook. Check twitter. Check tumblr. Repeat.

– Discover a pointless app and obsess over beating it slash getting the high score.

– Go to the bathroom with your phone and don’t come out for a solid 2 hours.

– Cancel plans with people under the guise that you’re going to study and then don’t. It’ll  make you feel amazing!!!

– Learn a new language or instrument. (The more obscure, the better.)

– Take every buzzfeed quiz ever. (Yes it was necessary to learn what type of condiment you are. Wow, I just checked and this is actually a thing.)

I’m guilty of doing that with Benedict Cumberbatch…

– And while you’re at it watch every buzzfeed video!

– Pick an actor and then watch every movie they’re in, especially ones where it’s only for one scene and bonus points if they don’t talk!

– Show people your cat photo album. (The sad thing is I did that today actually.)

– Start cleaning your room but end in a pile of nostalgia. You know the drill.

– Go through all of your old tweets and make a compilation of your favourites. Then show your mom and see what she says.

– There’s origami tutorials, hair tutorials, make up tutorials and more, youtube is your enabler, go forth and learn.

– Play The Wikipedia Game!

– Get side tracked on Wikipedia and suddenly find yourself a master of horse racing 5 hours later.

– Make a list of lists you need to make and then make those lists in excruciating detail.

– Have a dance party.

– Discover the food in your fridge, don’t be afraid to get creative!

And there you go! Let me know in the comments if you have any amazing procrastination tips :)

//I’ve actually already made the polar opposite list with some study tips that could potentially help you so you can check those out right here.

Cat Fact

This is seriously one of the coolest things ever.

So recently I learned that a cat’s coat colouring is linked the the X chromosome. I also learned that only one of each sex chromosome can be “active” or allowed to replicate at a time. Boys have it easy since there’s an X and a Y so they both can be active simultaneously but girls have 2 X’s so the mom’s and the dad’s X duke it out for the first 4 days from conception until one “wins” and becomes deactivated.

Great, I thought I was going to be learning cool cat facts to show off to people so that they think I’m ultra cool not sitting through grade 11 biology all over again you might be thinking well don’t worry we’re getting there hold your horses and also it’s just one cat fact cause I didn’t want to overwhelm you. //if enough people want it we can do cat facts in which there are multiple, quick facts about cats that are just as cool//

So during those first 4 days, both X’s are duplicating like no one’s business and once one of them shuts down no new ones are created but the old ones are still kicking around. These old ones get spread around the body and intermingled with the other cells which is normally not visible obviously BUT in cats where it’s linked to their colouring you can actually see it!! Calico cats! The reason they have this type of fur pattern is the X chromosomes from the mom and the dad distributed around their body!!

calicocat1 calicocat2 calicocat3

Also the reason why calico cats are solely female; males don’t have it in ’em. (literally speaking)

See, I told you this was cool.

(from left to right): Oreo, me, Julia, Gingersnap

Both pictures taken from on my bed although I only knew about one of them.

For some reason, the cats each bonded to one of us. Julia feeds them and takes care of their litter boxes but for some reason Oreo likes to chill with me. Probably because the view from my window is better. You know cats.

Bonjour

my face

I love the feeling of starting a new blog.

All the possibilities that might spring from this are still plausible because I haven’t realized yet that no one is going to read it. I’ll come around eventually. I’ve commenced many a blog (like 3) and the only semi-successful one is my tumblr but I really don’t count that as a blog because I’m not creating 100% of the things that go on that.

Wow getting deep on the first post. Here are the basics: My name is Karen. I love puns, foxes, the colour blue, mashed potatoes and sports. I’m in my first year of university doing mechanical engineering. I have two cats and a little sister. I read a butt load and love knowing unnecessary trivia.

Hopefully you’ll want to follow along with my life and thoughts and things that I want to share.

Adios,

Karen
